NI Water is urging households across Northern Ireland to take simple but essential steps to protect their properties as temperatures drop during the first cold snap of the season.

The utility provider has reinforced the importance of locating and testing stop valves, insulating exposed pipework and taking preventative measures to reduce the risk of leaks and burst pipes as colder weather sets in.

With a rise in freezing conditions expected in the weeks ahead, NI Water says early preparation is the most effective way to avoid costly damage and ensure water supplies remain uninterrupted.

‘Prevention is key’

NI Water education officer Anna Killen warned that freezing temperatures can cause significant damage if pipes are left unprotected.

She said:

“Burst pipes are one of the biggest risks facing homeowners during freezing weather. Water expands as it freezes, which can cause pipes to split and leak once temperatures start to rise again.

“Prevention is key - insulating pipes and knowing how to turn off your water supply at your stop valve can make all the difference in an emergency. Take action today to keep your water flowing and keep your home protected - a few simple steps can make all the difference.”

Practical steps to prevent winter pipe problems

NI Water has outlined a series of simple actions homeowners can take now to safeguard their homes:

  • Check your stop valve: Know where it is and test it now so you can turn off your water quickly in an emergency.

  • Keep your home warm: Maintain a steady indoor temperature, even in rooms you don’t use regularly.

  • Circulate warm air: Leave cupboard doors open under sinks and in utility spaces so warm air can reach pipes.

  • Insulate pipes and tanks: Fit pipe lagging and tank jackets for added protection against freezing temperatures.

  • Check your home insurance: Make sure your policy covers damage caused by water leaks or bursts.

  • Keep a plumber’s contact handy: Have the details of a qualified professional available should a problem occur.

  • Protect outdoor taps: Fit covers to outside taps to prevent freezing and bursting.

Free resources to help households prepare

NI Water is offering free stop valve tags and outdoor tap covers through an online water audit available at GetWaterFit. The tools are designed to make winter preparation easier and encourage customers to take proactive steps.

More guidance on pipe protection, including video tutorials and step-by-step advice, can be found at NI Water’s website, which also includes information on identifying and replacing lead pipes.

The organisation is encouraging homeowners to use the cold weather check as an opportunity to assess the age and condition of their water supply pipes, pointing to additional resources on how to spot and address lead pipe issues.
