Kilrea Bridge is set to reopen to cars and light vehicles this weekend, as the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) confirms that temporary stabilisation works are nearing completion.

The route will reopen at 8am on Saturday 6 December, restoring a vital connection for local residents and businesses in the run-up to Christmas.

The bridge, located on the B64 Bann Road, has been closed to allow engineers to carry out essential safety work. DfI has now confirmed that cars and light vehicles up to three tonnes will be permitted to cross from Saturday morning.

To ensure safety during ongoing works, access will be managed through a 2.5-metre width restriction at both ends of the bridge. The limitations will remain in place until permanent repairs are completed.

A spokesperson for the Department for Infrastructure said:

“The completion of these temporary works means we can restore access for cars and light vehicles ahead of the busy Christmas period. This is an important step in reducing disruption for the local community while ensuring public safety as a top priority.

“We ask that drivers adhere strictly to the restrictions that are in place.”

Permanent repair work remains underway and is progressing as scheduled, with the Department anticipating full completion by mid-February 2026.

The spokesperson added:

“Permanent repair works are progressing as planned and are expected to finish by mid-February 2026. Once complete, the road will fully reopen to all vehicles.

“The Department appreciates the patience and cooperation of the community and local businesses during this period and will continue to provide updates on progress.”

Further updates on the project are available on the Department’s dedicated webpage.
