The much-respected Ballymena man, John Walker, visionary founder of leading investment and development firm Magell, passed away this morning, Friday, 16th May, 2025.

A pioneering figure in the property sector, Mr Walker founded Magell in 1998, laying the groundwork for what would become one of Northern Ireland’s most respected commercial property companies. What began as a local venture has grown steadily over the last three decades into a key player in UK commercial real estate.

Under his leadership, Magell developed a strong reputation for excellence in property investment and development across the United Kingdom. The company has been active across a broad spectrum of markets including office, retail, logistics, distribution, and residential.

Today, the business continues to thrive under the stewardship of his grandson, Ryan Walker, representing the third generation of the family to carry the Magell vision forward.

Magell is known not only for its commercial success but also for its enduring commitment to supporting regional economic growth. With projects spanning Northern Ireland and beyond, the company plays a significant role in acquiring, designing, constructing, and managing high-quality commercial properties fit for the needs of modern occupiers.

John was also well known by his many loyal customers and staff after he established The Country Garage BMW, 50 years ago, now run by son James Walker, as well as successfully running The Country House Hotel.

John Walker’s entrepreneurial spirit, deep-rooted values, and long-term vision helped shape the landscape of commercial property across the UK. His legacy lives on in the thriving family business he founded and in the many communities and enterprises that have benefited from Magell’s developments.

From milking cows to becoming one of Ballymena’s most influential business figures, John Walker came a long way—and left an indelible mark on his hometown.

Former North Antrim MP Ian Paisley, a longstanding personal family friend of Mr Walker, paid tribute to the man he called a “true character”:

“I wish to express my condolences to the family of John Walker. John passed away in the early hours of this morning. He will be missed by his family and friends.

“John Walker was one of life’s true characters, and when he was made, the mould was shattered. An irreplaceable man of action. He was a significant entrepreneur and one of the true big business beasts of Ballymena.

“I have described him before as a legend, and his business life was legendary. He was a gentleman, a loyal friend, and a man of true grit and dedication. I have known him and his family for decades, and I know how great a gap a man of his stature will leave in the lives of his lovely family and friends.

“My condolences, thoughts, and prayers are with them all as they begin to come to terms with such a great loss.”

North Antrim MP and TUV leader Jim Allister has also paid tribute to Mr Walker:

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of John Walker, a towering figure in Ballymena’s business community and a man whose entrepreneurial legacy will long outlive him.

“John was a man of drive and determination. From humble beginnings, he built remarkable business success.

“I offer my sincere condolences to the entire Walker family at this time of loss.”
