TUV Leader, Jim Allister MP signing the Book of Commitment on Holocaust Memorial Day
The leader of Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV), Jim Allister MP, has marked Holocaust Memorial Day by signing the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment, reaffirming his party’s commitment to remembrance and to challenging antisemitism in modern society.
Speaking after signing the book, Mr Allister reflected on the significance of Holocaust Memorial Day, which commemorates the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered by the Nazi regime, alongside the millions of other victims of Nazi persecution.
He said:
“It was an honour yesterday to sign the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment and to reaffirm our collective duty to remember the unimaginable horrors inflicted on the Jewish people by the Nazis.
“At a time when antisemitism is once again on the rise, we must stand firm against hatred in all its forms.”
Holocaust Memorial Day is observed annually to encourage remembrance of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides, while also promoting education and reflection to help ensure such atrocities are never repeated.
The Book of Commitment, organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust, allows political leaders and public figures to publicly pledge their support for remembrance, education and opposition to hatred.
Mr Allister stressed that remembrance alone is not sufficient, highlighting the need for practical action in response to contemporary challenges faced by Jewish communities.
He added:
“Honouring the past is vital, but it must be matched by action. We have a responsibility to confront antisemitism wherever it appears today and to stand resolutely with the Jewish community.”
His remarks come amid wider concern across the UK and Europe about a rise in antisemitic incidents, prompting renewed calls from political leaders, community organisations and educators for vigilance, education and solidarity.
Holocaust Memorial Day serves not only as a moment of reflection on the past, but as a reminder of the ongoing responsibility to challenge prejudice, racism and hatred in all its forms, ensuring that the lessons of history continue to inform public life today.
