The community of Bushmills is mourning the loss of Major Robert James Wilmont M.B.E., who passed away peacefully on 26 August 2025 at Altnagelvin Hospital.

Born and raised in Bushmills, Major Wilmont was a man who embodied service, loyalty, and compassion.

He is survived by his beloved wife Diane, daughter Sophie and her husband Sam, and his much-adored grandson Benjamin. He was also the cherished son of Sandy and the late Lena, loving partner of Melissa, and a devoted brother, brother-in-law, and uncle.

A distinguished officer of the Irish Guards, Major Wilmont’s leadership and courage earned him the respect of his comrades and formal recognition in the form of the M.B.E. His service was marked by a deep sense of duty, fairness, and loyalty.

His comrades remember him not only as a soldier, but as a friend who stood alongside them through every challenge. “At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember him.”

Away from military life, Major Wilmont was known for his warmth, generosity, and ability to bring people together. Friends and family speak of his humour, kindness, and steady presence, qualities that endeared him to everyone he met.
