Carrickfergus was filled with colour, music and tradition yesterday as the world-famous Irish Guards marked their 125th anniversary with a dazzling public parade and musical marching display.
The celebrations saw the Irish Guards Regimental Band and Pipe Band, the Regimental Colour Party, and a full Ceremonial Guard of Honour take to the streets, creating an atmosphere of pride and pageantry.
Leading the parade was the regiment’s much-loved Wolfhound Mascot, Seamus, who guided the Guards from Carrickfergus Town Hall to Castle Car Park, where a world-class performance took place against the dramatic backdrop of Carrickfergus Castle.
A proud tradition

The Irish Guards were established by order of Queen Victoria in 1900, and over the past 125 years have served with distinction in conflicts across the globe, including both World Wars, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Known affectionately as “the Micks”, they are a proud part of the Household Division, regularly performing at Royal and State occasions including the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace and the King’s Birthday Parade.
Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, praised the Guards’ display:
“The Irish Guards delivered a truly spectacular afternoon in Carrickfergus on this significant milestone anniversary. I could see the excitement and pride on the faces of the people here in the town as they watched inspired by the skill and tradition on display.”

Community support
Reflecting on the warm welcome, Major Stephen McMichael, Irish Guards 125 Project Officer, said:
“Marking our 125th anniversary here in Carrickfergus was truly special. This historic town, with its stunning castle and centuries-long military connections, gave us the perfect backdrop to share our story with the people of Northern Ireland.
“We thoroughly enjoyed marching alongside the support of the local community and offer our heartfelt thanks for the friendship, support and encouragement shown to the Irish Guards yesterday and through the years.”

The Guards are admired worldwide for their ceremonial excellence in Central London, operational service, and their striking St Patrick’s Blue plume worn in the bearskin headdress.
Their anniversary celebrations in Carrickfergus brought together residents and visitors for a memorable occasion of history, heritage and military tradition.
