Plans are being developed to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Ballymena in 2026, following confirmation from Mid and East Antrim Borough Council that work is under way to mark the town’s historic milestone.

North Antrim DUP MLA Paul Frew said he had received confirmation from the Council after writing to senior officials to enquire about preparations for the anniversary year.

The landmark date marks 400 years since King Charles I granted the Ballymena Estate to the Adair family in 1626 — a pivotal moment in the town’s history that helped shape its commercial and civic identity.

Speaking on the announcement, Mr Frew said:

“This year, 2026, is a significant milestone for the town of Ballymena, 400 years ago in 1626 King Charles I granted the Ballymena Estate to the Adair family. This is the 400th anniversary year whereby the land was granted on the condition that the town would hold two annual fairs and a free Saturday market in perpetuity.”

The MLA said he had contacted the Chief Executive of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council to seek clarity on how the anniversary would be recognised, and welcomed the response he received.

“I wrote to the Chief Executive of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council to enquire what plans they have to mark this significant anniversary. I am delighted that they have informed me that teams across Council are in the planning stages for a variety of activity in Ballymena to celebrate the milestone.”

Early proposals, Mr Frew said, include heritage-focused initiatives alongside larger public celebrations aimed at drawing residents and visitors into the town centre.

“I have been informed that early plans include a new display of the Ballymena Castle stones, and plans for a larger scale festival/event with the possibility of a parade through the town.”

The anniversary is being viewed as an opportunity not only to reflect on Ballymena’s past, but also to strengthen local pride and showcase the town’s cultural and historical assets.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the very best of the town and Borough; it will also help to raise awareness of the town’s history and heritage, something that is important for creating a sense of pride and identity.”

Mr Frew cautioned that plans remain at an early stage and will depend on available funding, but said he intends to follow developments closely.

“I am advised that plans are in an early stage and subject to financial considerations, I look forward to seeing plan’s progress to ensure that this significant anniversary gets the recognition it deserves.”

Further details on events and activities are expected to emerge as planning progresses throughout 2026.
