Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has announced the cancellation of its popular annual ‘Hallowena’ event at Ballymena’s People’s Park due to forecasted high winds and heavy rain.
The decision was made following Met Office warnings of gusts of up to 56mph and persistent downpours on Thursday 30 October, which would make conditions unsafe for both attendees and council staff.
A Council spokesperson said the difficult decision was based on public safety concerns:
“With such high winds, the staging area cannot be erected, and the direction of the winds would prove dangerous for fireworks.
“Council understands that this decision will come as a disappointment, but the safety and wellbeing of residents and staff remain top priority and is in line with other Council’s across NI who have also cancelled events on Thursday.”
The ‘Hallowena’ event is one of Ballymena’s most popular autumn celebrations, traditionally attracting thousands of families for fireworks, live entertainment, and themed activities.
However, Council has confirmed that ticket holders will receive full refunds, and those who booked will be notified via email soon.
Residents looking to celebrate Halloween can still attend other events across the borough. The Halloween Hooley in Larne will go ahead as planned on Friday 31 October from 6pm at Town Park. The event is free and open to all residents.
Meanwhile, the Carrickfergus Halloween event on Wednesday 29 October is already sold out.
Council added that, given the UK Met Office’s ongoing weather warnings, residents should check local forecasts before attending outdoor events.
As a gesture to the community, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has also announced plans to enhance the Ballymena Christmas Switch On celebrations, promising “additional entertainment” later this year.
