A planning application for a new full-size 3G football pitch and spectator stand at Ballymena Showgrounds has been approved by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s Planning Committee.

A planning officer told the committee, which met at The Braid in Ballymena on Thursday, that the existing grass pitch (number seven) is one of several within the Ballymena Showgrounds complex.

In addition to upgrading the pitch to a 3G surface, the proposal includes four floodlights, a new stand to accommodate 176 spectators, a four-metre-high perimeter fence around the pitch, 12-metre-high fencing at each goal end and additional fencing to protect spectators watching from pitch side.

The planning officer said one objection had been received from a neighbouring property raising concerns about noise, lighting, “disrespectful language” and disruption at the Showgrounds facility.

He described the issue of “disrespectful language” as “unfortunate”, adding that such behaviour could occur in the existing facilities.

Alderman Reuben Glover (DUP) proposed accepting the recommendation to approve the application. The proposal was seconded by the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford (Ulster Unionist Party).

Councillor Minford asked about the operating hours of the proposed floodlights and was told that conditions would be imposed by the council’s environmental health department.

Alderman Paul Reid (DUP), representing Larne Lough, said:

“As one who lives very near to a football stadium, you can hear all kinds of language but that goes with the territory, unfortunately. In reference to the objection, there is currently a pitch there. There are spectators who will be there, so really, there will be no change.”

Councillor Archie Rae (Sinn Féin), representing Braid, commented:

“It is a welcome thing for Ballymena Showgrounds. It can only enhance the place and the way the weather is at the minute, a 3G or 4G pitch is the way forward.”

Following a vote, planning permission was granted unanimously.
