Glenarm mourns the death of a ‘Gentleman’ Lord Antrim

The death has been announced of Alexander Randal Mark McDonnell, 9th Earl of Antrim. Glenarm Estate announced the sad news yesterday (Wednesday 21 July 2021):

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Alexander, Earl of Antrim who died peacefully this morning following a short illness.

“Lord Antrim had an illustrious career as Keeper of Conservation for the Tate Gallery in London and for many years was the proud custodian of Glenarm Castle. His loss will be mourned by all of his family, including his many grandchildren, as well as all the great friends he has here in Glenarm.”

Lord Antrim was much respected and very well known among Glenarm Castle Estate tenants and visitors, and among the local seaside village community, who simply knew him as ‘Alexander’.

Jon McClean, owner of Shambles Workshop, based on the Glenarm Estate commented yesterday:

“A very sad day arriving at the workshop today to this news.

“Both the family and staff at Glenarm Castle welcomed us with open arms and we are proud to work together as a family home and public estate. Our sincerest condolences go out to the family, staff and friends of the Earl.

“Gentleman”.

Details for Lord Antrim’s funeral will be announced in due course.
