Gary Anderson still at large as police issue new image and trace his movements

Police have issued a fresh appeal to locate convicted murderer Gary Anderson, who remains unlawfully at large four days after failing to return to prison following temporary release.

The 29-year-old was last seen at around 11am on Monday 14 September in the Eastway area of Creggan in Derry/Londonderry. Police have now released a more recent photograph of Anderson as efforts to find him continue.

Detectives say extensive searches, CCTV checks and patrols have been carried out, while officers are also liaising with An Garda Síochána.

Police investigating every report received

Anderson was sentenced in 2023 to 15 years for murder and had been on temporary release from prison on Monday when he failed to return.

Detective Inspector Gareth Lavery said:

“We are grateful for information received following our public appeal on Monday and we want to assure you, we are investigating every report made to us, and we are doing all we can to locate Gary Anderson.

“However, as of this time, Gary Anderson has not been located.

“We are issuing a more recent photo of Gary Anderson – who is approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall, of slim build and with brown hair - and make a direct appeal directly to Gary to hand himself in.”

Appeal for footage from Creggan

Police are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who was in the Eastway area on Monday morning and may have footage that could help establish Anderson’s movements.

Detective Inspector Lavery said:

“We reiterate our appeal to anyone who knows where Gary is, or indeed has any information about his movements or whereabouts, not to approach him directly but to contact police as soon as possible.

“We’re also keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the Eastway area on Monday around the time Gary Anderson is reported to have been last seen, and who may have relevant footage.”

Public warned not to approach Anderson

Anyone who sees Anderson or has information about his whereabouts should not approach him directly. Police are asking people to call 101 as soon as possible, quoting reference 555 of 14/09/26.

Information can also be provided anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The renewed appeal remains focused both on locating Anderson and establishing his movements since he was last seen in Creggan on Monday morning.
