Five-week road closure for £854,000 resurfacing scheme on Larne route

Motorists in the Larne area are being warned to expect significant disruption from next week as a major £854,000 road resurfacing project gets underway, bringing a continuous five-week closure to part of the B99 Waterfall Road and Watch Hill Road.

The Department for Infrastructure scheme will resurface almost 3km of road between the Ballyrickard Road/Waterfall Road junction and the New Line junction, with work due to begin on Monday 3 August.

Five-week closure planned

To allow the work to be carried out safely, the affected stretch of road will be closed continuously from Monday 3 August until Friday 11 September 2026.

A signed diversion will direct traffic via the A8 Belfast Road, B59 Doagh Road and B90 Old Carrick/Upper Road, with the same route operating in reverse.

While local access will be maintained where possible, the Department has warned that motorists should expect delays and allow extra time for journeys in the area.

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said the resurfacing project represents a significant investment in the local road network.

“This is a substantial investment for the Larne area which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users.

“The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities.

“I would like to thank residents, local businesses, and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”

Weather could affect timetable

The Department said work has been scheduled to minimise disruption as far as possible, although temporary traffic restrictions will remain in place throughout the project.

The resurfacing is expected to be substantially complete by Friday 11 September, subject to favourable weather conditions. Any changes to the programme will be communicated to the public if required.
