Holiday plans across Northern Ireland face possible significant disruption this Easter weekend as the Met Office warns of a rapidly deepening low-pressure system bringing "very strong winds" to the region.

The yellow weather warning, which covers all of Northern Ireland including Ballymena and surrounding areas, is set to take effect from 18:00 on Saturday, 4 April, lasting through until midday on Easter Sunday.

Meteorologists are tracking an intense weather front moving northeastwards across the UK, threatening to dampen celebrations with a period of intense gales.

Dangerous Conditions Expected

While families prepare for Easter Sunday festivities, the Met Office has cautioned that the "rapidly deepening area of low pressure" could cause structural damage and hazardous travel conditions.

Peak gusts are expected to reach between 50-60 mph across most inland areas. However, those in more exposed coastal locations could face gusts of up to 70 mph.

The warning also highlights a "slight chance" of even more extreme conditions further north, with parts of western Scotland bracing for potential gales of 80-90 mph.

Impact on Easter Sunday

The timing of the storm is particularly impactful, coinciding with Saturday evening travel and the first half of Easter Sunday.

Though winds are expected to gradually ease throughout Sunday afternoon, the Met Office warns that the "intensity and shape" of the system still carries some uncertainty, urging residents to stay updated on the latest forecasts.

Commuters and those planning outdoor Easter egg hunts or church services should prepare for:

• Potential delays to public transport.

• Difficult driving conditions, particularly for high-sided vehicles.

• Possible power outages or damage to temporary outdoor structures.
