A new doctor-led medical weight management service has officially launched in Ballymena, bringing clinically supervised weight loss care to the heart of the local community.

Weight Loss Clinic NI, founded by local GP Dr McCandless, has expanded its services with a new Ballymena branch located within Highway Health on Broughshane Street.

The expansion aims to improve access to safe, evidence-based weight management for people whose weight is affecting their health, wellbeing or quality of life.

Announcing the expansion, Dr Jane McCandless said:

“We are delighted to be expanding to Ballymena and are committed to improving health within the local community through a professional, clinician-led weight management service.”

Unlike commercial or cosmetic weight loss programmes, the clinic’s approach is firmly rooted in medical care. Patients receive a full clinical assessment and ongoing medical oversight, with weight loss medication considered where appropriate.

Jane explained:

“Our focus is on supporting people whose weight is affecting their health, wellbeing, or quality of life, and who want access to safe, medically supervised care.”

The Ballymena service is specifically designed to address the health risks associated with excess weight, rather than offering short-term or aesthetic solutions.

“This service is designed to reduce health risks associated with excess weight, rather than offering quick or cosmetic solutions,” Jane added.

Considering medical weight loss but unsure where to begin?

With treatments such as GLP-1 medications including Mounjaro and Wegovy now widely discussed, many people are left wondering whether they are suitable, safe, or appropriate for their individual circumstances.

At Weight Loss Clinic NI, patients are guided through these options by a GP-led clinical team, ensuring any treatment is carefully assessed, medically supervised, and tailored to their health needs.

The clinic emphasises informed decision-making, helping patients understand what is right for them rather than navigating complex choices alone.

Dr McCandless is a local GP with a special interest in obesity and weight management. She established Weight Loss Clinic NI (formerly Ama Clinic) last year with the aim of providing people with access to potentially life-changing weight loss support that is not currently available through the NHS.

Now overseeing clinics in Coleraine, Ballymena and Derry/Londonderry, Dr McCandless works alongside a team of expert nurses to deliver what the clinic describes as exceptional, patient-centred care.

Having already seen significant improvements in health outcomes among patients attending the Coleraine clinic, Weight Loss Clinic NI says it is passionate about extending this service to more communities across Northern Ireland.

Jane said:

“By delivering care locally, we aim to make high-quality medical support more accessible. Our approach is responsible, evidence-based, and centred on long-term health. Above all, patients are supported in a safe, confidential, and professionally led environment.”

The opening of the Ballymena branch reflects growing recognition of obesity as a complex medical condition requiring personalised, clinician-led care, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Residents interested in finding out more or booking an appointment are encouraged to contact the clinic directly.
