The newly refurbished Crumlin Fire Station
Crumlin Fire Station has officially completed a major £1.15 million refurbishment, marking a significant investment in Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) facilities and the local community.
Originally built in 1960, the station has been modernised to meet current operational and safety standards while also improving firefighter welfare and environmental sustainability.
The refurbishment project began in January 2025 and was completed in August 2025. The works included the creation of a bespoke kit room, improved welfare facilities for firefighters, and extensive thermal insulation upgrades.
The improvements are expected to cut the building’s energy demand and carbon emissions to just 30% of their previous levels, supporting NIFRS’ wider sustainability goals.
Ryan Thompson, NIFRS Northern Area Commander, welcomed the investment:
“The £1.15m refurbishment of Crumlin Fire Station marks a significant investment in both our people and the community we serve. For 65 years, the Station has stood at the heart of Crumlin, proudly safeguarding local residents.
“These recent upgrades will ensure the Station remains a vital and effective resource for many years to come by enhancing firefighter safety and welfare, and by reducing our environmental impact through our commitment to sustainability.
“We are proud to see this investment come to life, and we are immensely grateful to everyone who contributed to the project, as well as the local community for their ongoing trust and support of their Fire & Rescue Service. Together, we are making Northern Ireland a safer place.”
The modernised station is expected to provide long-term benefits not only for firefighters but also for the wider Crumlin community, ensuring the 65-year-old station continues its legacy of protection and service for decades to come.
