Sinn Féin Braid representative, Councillor Archie Rae, has welcomed the commencement of a £420,000 road resurfacing scheme on the A43 Glenravel Road in Cargan, describing it as a “long awaited full road improvement”.

The major infrastructure project, announced by Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins, began on Monday 11 August 2025 and covers a 1.88-kilometre stretch from the outskirts of Cargan village to the local council boundary. The scheme also includes full drainage works.

Night-time road closures in place

To facilitate the works, the road will be closed nightly from 8pm to 4am until Friday 22 August 2025. Diversion routes have been put in place for both cars and HGVs.

Speaking as the scheme got underway, Councillor Rae said:

“Today I welcome the beginning of the road re-surfacing of the A43 Glenravel Road, Cargan.

“This will begin on the outskirts of Cargan village to the council boundary and will include full drainage works.

“This will create the need for the road to be closed from 20.00 hrs to 04.00hrs up until the 22nd of August, with a diversion in place.

”I have reported this part of the A43 on many occasions and was patched by road service which was always going to be a temporary fix. Today marks the start of a long awaited full road improvement.

”My thanks go out to DFI Roads for their constant help to fix and improve this road and also to Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins for her help in bringing this much needed resurfacing work to our area.”

Investment in rural infrastructure

The project forms part of a wider programme of road improvements across Northern Ireland. Minister Kimmins previously said the scheme would “deliver significant benefits for residents and road users” and highlighted the importance of investing in the rural road network to better connect communities and businesses.

Subject to favourable weather, the resurfacing works are expected to be substantially complete by 22 August 2025.
