Main pitch at Ballymena Showgrounds
Mid and East Antrim Borough Council is seeking planning approval for the next phase of redevelopment at Ballymena Showgrounds — including replacing the stadium’s existing natural grass surface with a new full-size 3G/hybrid pitch system.
The application, submitted for the council-owned venue on St Patrick’s Link, relates to the main arena at the home of Ballymena United F.C..
It comes just months after the council’s Planning Committee approved a separate proposal for a new full-size 3G training pitch within the wider Showgrounds complex.
That earlier scheme — understood to relate to pitch number seven — included four floodlights, a new 176-seat stand, a four-metre perimeter fence, 12-metre fencing behind each goal and additional spectator protection barriers.
A supporting planning statement submitted with the latest application said the final playing surface specification will be “determined at the tender stage”, with permission being sought for a solution that covers both 3G and hybrid options “to ensure operational flexibility”.
The document said the current plans involve a significantly smaller scope of works than earlier proposals previously considered for the site.
Works outlined in the application include removing the existing natural grass surface and underlying soil, installing a new engineered pitch system and constructing a complex drainage and irrigation network connected to the existing borehole supply.

Improved drainage system proposed for new pitch at Ballymena Showgrounds

According to the planning statement, the proposed design incorporates sustainable drainage and attenuation measures intended to manage surface water without increasing flood risk.
The statement described the project as “a small-scale, sustainable improvement to an existing key community facility”.
It added: “The proposal respects the established character of the area and makes efficient use of existing urban land.”
The council also said the development would deliver “significant long-term benefits for local sport and recreation”.
Ballymena United F.C. has been approached for comment.
