A full meeting of the Mid and East Antrim Borough Council which was due to take place on Monday evening, 9th June, has been postponed. It comes after a teenage girl was sexually assaulted in the town on Saturday evening.

Ballymena Councillor Lawrie Philpott confirmed the meeting change on Monday, stating he requested the postponement to ensure local representatives could demonstrate solidarity with the community during a time of heightened concern and distress.

“Due to the recent sexual attacks in Ballymena I have been successful in my request to postpone tonight’s full council meeting,” said Cllr Philpott.

“This allows for local elected representatives to attend a public meeting this evening and show support to all in our community.”

The peaceful protest, taking place on Monday evening at 7:30pm in Ken’s Car Park, organised following reports of multiple sexual assaults in the town, is expected to draw significant attendance from residents, local leaders, and community activists.

The reported attacks, which have sent shockwaves through the area, have led to widespread calls for action, safety reassurances, and support for victims.

Community leaders have stressed the importance of unity and presence during times of public concern, and Cllr Philpott’s announcement reflects a growing commitment from local officials to engage directly with constituents on these local issues.
