An inspiring couple from Carrickfergus are encouraging others not to be put off by technology after discovering how a digital health app has helped them stay informed, reduce anxiety and take greater control of their healthcare.

At 80 and 79 years old respectively, Roy and Gloria Lowry say the health service’s My Care app has transformed the way they access appointments and medical information, proving that age is no barrier to embracing digital technology.

The couple, who use services provided by the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, admit they were initially unsure about using new technology but have found the app straightforward and easy to navigate.

Peace of mind at their fingertips

For Gloria, one of the biggest benefits has been being able to view some test results much sooner than would previously have been possible.

Rather than waiting for results to be sent to her GP, she can now access information directly through the app, helping to ease worry and uncertainty during what can often be an anxious time for patients.

“I find the app very easy to use. I don’t consider myself to be very technical, but I have no problems with it at all,” said Mrs Lowry.

“I was able to access some results on the app almost immediately. I didn’t have to wait on the results being sent to my GP, I could see them right away.

“It saves me from being anxious and worrying. The information comes in quicker and I like that very much. It gives me peace of mind.”

‘If I can use it anyone can’

Roy says the simplicity of the app has been key to its success for him.

With secure access to health information available through a password-protected account, he says important details are now available whenever he needs them.

“I like the app very much, I just put my password in, and everything is at my fingertips,” he said.

“I’m eighty years of age and if I can use it anyone can!”

Thousands across Northern Ireland already using the service

The My Care app was first introduced by health trusts across Northern Ireland in 2023 and has grown rapidly in popularity since its launch.

Almost 325,000 citizens have now downloaded the app, which has been designed to improve access to healthcare services and give patients greater control over their own health information.

By offering secure and easily accessible technology, the service aims to make managing appointments, health information and some test results more convenient for people of all ages.

Breaking down barriers to digital healthcare

Dr James Nelson, Chief Clinical Information Officer at the Northern Trust, said the experience of Roy and Gloria demonstrates that digital healthcare tools can be beneficial regardless of age or technical confidence.

“Mr and Mrs Lowry’s experience shows that digital health tools can benefit everyone, regardless of age or technical ability,” he said.

“My Care is designed to be user-friendly and accessible, helping patients stay informed and engaged with their care.”

Encouraging others to give it a try

Having overcome their own concerns about using digital technology, Roy and Gloria are now encouraging others in their age group to give the app a chance rather than assuming it is too complicated.

Their experience highlights how digital healthcare services are becoming an increasingly important part of the health system in Northern Ireland, while also demonstrating that age need not be a barrier to staying connected and informed about personal healthcare.
