Football fans across Ballymena are set for a rare treat this summer as two of Celtic’s most iconic figures, John Hartson and Jackie McNamara, come together for a special live event at the Tullyglass House Hotel.
Taking place in June, An Evening with Celtic Legends promises a night of stories, laughter and behind-the-scenes insight from two players who helped define a successful era for the Glasgow club.
A night of stories, silverware and survival
John Hartson, who joined Celtic in 2001, quickly became a fan favourite with his powerful presence up front.
The Welsh striker scored 110 goals in just over 200 competitive appearances, helping the club secure six major honours, including three league titles before departing in 2006.
Beyond football, Hartson’s personal story adds a powerful dimension to the evening. In 2009, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer that spread to his brain. After undergoing treatment, he went on to establish The John Hartson Foundation, raising awareness of the disease and supporting others facing similar battles.
Joining him on stage is former Celtic captain Jackie McNamara, whose impact at the club spanned more than a decade. Signing in 1995, he made an immediate impression by winning PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year in his debut season.
McNamara went on to make over 350 appearances, collecting nine trophies and playing a key role in Celtic’s run to the UEFA Cup final. Individually, he earned further recognition with the PFA Scotland Players’ Player of the Year award in 1998 and the SFWA Footballer of the Year in 2004.
He also represented Scotland more than 30 times and later moved into management with clubs including Dundee United and Partick Thistle.
Behind the scenes with Celtic greats
Fans attending the Ballymena event can expect a mix of football nostalgia and humour, with both players sharing career highlights, dressing room stories and never-before-heard anecdotes from their time at one of Scotland’s biggest clubs.
Lee Newton, Director of Red Shoe Entertainment, said:
“It’s not every day that you get two of these football legends in the same building! Packed full of anecdotes, banter and incredible insight, this will be a night to remember for any Hoops fans, or just anyone with a love for the beautiful game.”
