A political banner placed opposite a church in Ballycastle ahead of St Patrick’s Day has been swiftly removed after concerns were raised by North Antrim MLA Jon Burrows, who said the move helped protect the town’s tradition of positive cross-community relations.
The Ulster Unionist Party leader said the large Sinn Féin banner had appeared opposite Ballycastle Presbyterian Church in the days leading up to the annual celebrations.
Burrows said he contacted local Sinn Féin representatives to request its removal and welcomed the speed with which the matter was resolved.
Concerns raised ahead of St Patrick’s Day
Speaking after the banner was taken down, Burrows said the timing of the display had raised concerns given the importance of maintaining a welcoming atmosphere in the town during cultural celebrations.
He said:
“In the days leading up to St Patrick’s Day; a time when many people across our community come together to celebrate our shared culture and heritage, a large Sinn Fein political banner appeared opposite Ballycastle Presbyterian Church.
“Ballycastle has long been recognised as a town where cross community relationships are positive and respectful. People work hard to maintain that spirit of neighbourliness and mutual understanding, particularly at times of cultural celebration.”
Call to maintain good relations
The North Antrim MLA said public spaces should reflect the town’s welcoming character, particularly during a period when both residents and visitors gather to celebrate.
“Public spaces in Ballycastle should reflect the welcoming character of the town, especially in the run up to St Patrick’s Day when residents and visitors alike are looking forward to celebrating together in a positive and respectful atmosphere,” he said.
Burrows added that he raised the issue locally to ensure the matter was addressed quickly.
“I brought this to the attention of Sinn Fein locally today because urgent steps had to be taken to remove the poster and I am pleased it was swiftly removed. I would call upon everyone to ensure good relations in Ballycastle are maintained and St Patrick’s Day is not weaponised by anyone.
“I am glad this matter has been resolved by working together.”
