Ulster Unionist MLA Jon Burrows has paid warm tribute to the people of North Antrim after what he described as an “overwhelming” response to this year’s Christmas Appeal in aid of the Macmillan Unit at Antrim Area Hospital.

Mr Burrows said he was “totally blown away by the generosity” shown by local residents, businesses, and community groups, whose contributions will provide vital support to the specialist palliative care facility.

The annual appeal remains a cherished tradition in the constituency, originally founded by his predecessor, former MLA Colin Crawford. Mr Burrows said he was honoured to continue the legacy.

“It was a profound privilege to champion this wonderful initiative started by Colin Crawford,” said Mr Burrows.

“I was particularly pleased that Colin could visit the Unit this morning to witness this vital work firsthand and speak with the incredible staff. Their dedication is a testament to the compassion at the heart of our local health service.”

The Macmillan Unit at Antrim Area Hospital is a dedicated inpatient palliative care service offering high-quality, person-centred support for adults with complex and life-limiting illnesses. Its care includes symptom management, rehabilitation, comfort, and compassionate end-of-life support.

The purpose-built unit includes 12 single rooms and is operated by a multidisciplinary team committed to ensuring patients maintain maximum comfort and independence while also supporting families and carers through difficult times.

The facility’s excellence has been formally recognised with the Macmillan Quality Environment Mark — a prestigious accreditation for therapeutic environments that uphold patient dignity and wellbeing.

‘A Powerful Message of Solidarity and Hope’

Reflecting on the success of the appeal, Mr Burrows said the response demonstrated the unifying strength of the community.

“The response to this appeal underscores the incredible spirit of the people of North Antrim,” he said.

“In coming together to support the Macmillan Unit, we are directly helping our neighbours, friends, and family members during the most difficult periods of their lives. This kindness provides not just practical support, but a powerful message of community solidarity and hope.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who donated and helped spread love where it is needed most.”
