Residents and visitors from across Northern Ireland gathered in large numbers at Portglenone Forest on Saturday 25 April, as the 2026 Bluebell Festival transformed the woodland into a vibrant celebration of nature, community, and outdoor activity.

The annual event, organised by the MEA Outdoors team from Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, saw families, walkers, and nature enthusiasts descend on the forest to experience one of the region’s most striking seasonal displays — a vast carpet of native bluebells in full bloom.

The protected bluebell species, which thrives across the woodland each spring, created a sweeping sea of colour throughout the forest floor, drawing visitors keen to witness the short-lived natural spectacle at its peak.

Beyond the visual highlight, the festival delivered a full programme of activities designed to engage all ages and encourage deeper connection with the outdoors.

Live music performances provided a lively backdrop throughout the day, while orienteering challenges offered visitors the chance to explore the forest in a more interactive way.

Families and younger attendees were particularly well catered for, with hands-on woodland den building and a range of craft activities bringing a creative, educational element to the event. These activities encouraged children to engage directly with their surroundings, fostering both play and learning in a natural environment.

For those seeking a more relaxed experience, outdoor yoga sessions offered a quieter space within the forest setting, allowing participants to unwind and connect with nature amid the bluebell display.

The Bluebell Festival continues to grow as a key fixture in the local events calendar, combining environmental appreciation with accessible outdoor recreation. Its success highlights the ongoing demand for family-friendly, nature-based experiences across the borough and reinforces the importance of preserving and celebrating local natural heritage.

With the bluebell bloom lasting only a short window each year, the event once again underscored the unique seasonal draw of Portglenone Forest — bringing together community, visitors, and the natural landscape in a single, memorable day.
