DUP Ballymena Councillor Lawrie Philpott has confirmed that action is being taken to resolve ongoing community concerns regarding the placement of clothing bins in key areas of the town.

Speaking this week, Cllr Philpott said he has “continued to find a resolution to the ongoing clothing bin issues of certain residents not appreciating the reasons clothing bins have been placed in community locations.”

The bins in question have reportedly caused concern among local residents who have questioned their visibility and placement in public areas, with ongoing issues around clothes being stole from the bins. In recent times some individuals have been witnessed rummaging through the bins with clothes left strewn around the ground.

As part of the solution, Cllr Philpott confirmed that changes are now underway.

“I am pleased to confirm Braidwater Retail Park clothing bins are being removed (one today and remainder next week) soonest,” he said.

Additionally, steps are being taken at another key location. “Also two of the clothing bins outside the Waveney Recycle Centre will be moved into the compound covered by CCTV and the remainder outside will be removed next week,” he added.

The adjustments come following ongoing discussions between local representatives and the local authority.

Cllr Philpott extended his gratitude to council officers for their cooperation throughout the process:

“My thanks go to Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s waste management team for the endless calls, emails and visits to the said sites.”

The move is expected to reduce concerns around dumping, misuse, and the visual impact of bins, while maintaining clothing recycling options for the community in more appropriate and secure locations.

Local residents are encouraged to continue making use of designated recycling services in line with council guidance.
