In a perfect fusion of television stardom and community fundraising, the Cancer Research Ballymena Group has announced an unmissable evening for fans of Northern Irish drama.

On Friday, 17th October, at 7.30pm, the group invites locals to Ballymena Rugby Club for a special Q&A session with Declan Lawn, the acclaimed co-creator, writer, and director of the BAFTA award-winning series Blue Lights.

This intimate event promises behind-the-scenes insights into one of the region’s most gripping TV exports, while supporting vital cancer research efforts.

Blue Lights, which chronicles the high-stakes world of response police officers navigating the streets of Belfast, has firmly established itself as a cornerstone of contemporary British television.

Since its debut, the series has garnered widespread acclaim for its authentic portrayal of frontline policing amid Northern Ireland’s complex social landscape.

With the recent premiere of series three this Autumn, and a fourth season already greenlit, the show’s momentum shows no signs of slowing. Its trophy cabinet boasts a BAFTA, alongside a host of other accolades, cementing its status as a “certified Northern Irish success story”.

Ballymena man Declan Lawn, a seasoned filmmaker with a deep-rooted connection to the region’s storytelling traditions, will take centre stage for the evening.

Attendees can expect a candid exploration of the drama’s origins, from its initial conception to the hurdles of commissioning. Lawn will delve into the meticulous casting process that brought characters to life, the strategic selection of filming locations that captured Belfast’s raw energy, and the nail-biting plot twists that have kept viewers on the edge of their seats.

True to the series’ penchant for emotional gut-punches, he will also address one of its most heartbreaking moments: “why Gerry had to die!” – a narrative choice that sparked fervent debate among fans.

The event’s interactive format ensures audience engagement, with ample time reserved for questions directly to Lawn. Whether you’re pondering the challenges of scripting authentic police procedural drama or curious about the creative sparks that ignited Blue Lights, this Q&A offers a rare chance to hear straight from the source.

Organised by the dedicated volunteers of the Cancer Research Ballymena Group, the evening doubles as a beacon of local philanthropy. Funds raised will directly bolster Cancer Research UK’s groundbreaking work in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment – a cause that resonates deeply in communities across Northern Ireland and beyond.

Tickets are priced at £15, payable in cash on entry, and include a complimentary glass of wine to toast the occasion. With spaces limited, early arrival is advised to secure your spot at this Ballymena Rugby Club gathering.

This event underscores the power of cultural initiatives to drive positive change. As Northern Ireland’s creative industries flourish, opportunities like this not only celebrate homegrown talent but also rally support for health charities that touch countless lives.

Don’t miss this chance to illuminate the stories behind Blue Lights while contributing to a brighter future free from cancer.
