Cannabis plants seized by police
Police say they have dismantled a “sophisticated and well organised” cannabis cultivation operation after around 300 plants were discovered at a property in Portadown.
A 32-year-old man was arrested after police said he attempted to make off from the scene when officers arrived at the property in the Moy Road area on Wednesday evening, 9 September.
Around 300 plants recovered
Local Policing Team officers made the discovery at approximately 7.15pm, with what police described as a substantial number of cannabis plants found growing across rooms in outbuildings and sheds.
Inspector Connolly said:
“On officers’ arrival, a 32-year-old man attempted to make off from the scene after exiting a static caravan located in the area.
“He was subsequently detained a short time later, and arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of a Class B drug, cultivating cannabis, possession of a Class B controlled drug, and dishonestly using electricity.”
Police said the man remained in custody as enquiries continued.
Inspector Connolly added:
“This was a sophisticated and well organised cultivation operation. At this time, we estimate we recovered around 300 plants from the premises which will now undergo further forensic examination, along with other items.”
Police point to organised crime risk
Police have not given an estimated street value for the cannabis recovered, but said the seizure had prevented a substantial quantity of drugs from reaching the streets.
Inspector Connolly said:
“This substantial quantity of drugs has now been prevented from reaching our streets and what appears to be a well-organised operation has been dismantled.
“Targeting drugs supply is a priority for the Police Service of Northern Ireland and our officers are always on the lookout for any potential criminal activity.
“Cannabis farms such as these often have links to serious and organised crime gangs. By shutting down this grow, we have helped to stop criminality in its tracks.
“We will continue to be relentless in our commitment to tackle the illegal supply and use of drugs, and will continue to investigate those who profit from the consequent misery and harm.”
Appeal for information
Police are now asking anyone who may be able to assist the investigation to come forward.
Inspector Connolly said:
“I am appealing to members of the public who may have any information which could be of assistance to us to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1416 09/09/26.
“Any information, regardless of how small you think it may seem, could potentially help make a big difference with our ongoing enquiries.”

The investigation remains ongoing, with the approximately 300 plants and other items recovered from the property now due to undergo further forensic examination.
