Thousands of people lined the streets of Coleraine on Saturday morning as more than 500 military personnel took part in a major Armed Forces Day parade under clear blue skies.
The town centre was awash with spectators as service personnel, veterans, civic leaders and military representatives gathered to honour the contribution of the UK’s Armed Forces in what is one of the largest events of its kind ever hosted in the borough.
The celebration, which continues throughout the day at Christie Park, has brought together military displays, family entertainment, interactive exhibits and aerial demonstrations in a show of appreciation for those who serve and have served in the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force.
Mayor hosts civic breakfast before official ceremonies

The day began with an Armed Forces Day breakfast hosted by Causeway Coast and Glens Mayor Councillor Dawn Huggins.
Among those attending were Mrs Alison Millar, Lord Lieutenant of Londonderry; Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly MLA; Communities Minister Gordon Lyons MLA; Veterans Commissioner David Johnstone MP; Air Marshal Sean Reynolds of the Royal Air Force; Brigadier Andrew Muddiman of the Royal Navy; Brigadier Piers Ashfield of the British Army; along with other civic leaders, elected representatives and senior military personnel.
The gathering marked the start of a day dedicated to recognising the service, sacrifice and commitment of Armed Forces personnel, veterans and their families.
Drumhead Service pays tribute to serving personnel and veterans

A ceremonial Drumhead Service and Flag Raising Ceremony was later held at the cenotaph, providing a moment of reflection and remembrance.
The service paid tribute to those currently serving as well as former personnel who have dedicated their lives to military service.
Addressing those gathered, Mayor Huggins spoke of the significance of the day and her own personal connection to military life.
She said:
“Today is a day of recognition. A day when we come together to honour the courage, commitment, and sacrifice of the men and women who serve, and who have served, in our Armed Forces.
“As someone who has worn the uniform, this day carries a deeply personal meaning. I know firsthand the pride that comes with service—but also the challenges, the sacrifices, and the quiet resilience required not just on operations, but in everyday life.”
The Mayor also paid tribute to personnel currently serving around the world.
She added:
“Their service, whether seen or unseen, is essential. They stand watch so that the rest of us may live in safety. They represent the very best of our country, and their dedication is recognised and deeply appreciated by this country.”
Royal Irish Regiment leads parade through packed town centre
One of the day’s standout moments came as the Band, Bugles, Pipes and Drums of the Royal Irish Regiment led the main parade through Coleraine town centre.
The procession drew sustained applause from crowds lining the route, creating a colourful and ceremonial spectacle as military personnel marched through the heart of the town.
With hundreds of service personnel taking part and thousands turning out to watch, the parade demonstrated the strong public support that Armed Forces Day continues to receive across Northern Ireland.
Military village and RAF Falcons among major attractions

Activities are continuing throughout the day at Christie Park, where a large military village has been established featuring displays, demonstrations and opportunities for visitors to meet serving personnel.
Families and visitors are also enjoying a programme of entertainment and interactive exhibits designed to showcase the work of the Armed Forces.
One of the most anticipated highlights is the RAF Falcons parachute display team, whose appearance is expected to draw further crowds later in the day.
The event has transformed Coleraine into a focal point for national Armed Forces Day celebrations, bringing together military personnel, veterans, families and members of the public in a shared expression of respect and appreciation.

As celebrations continue, organisers hope the day will not only provide memorable experiences for visitors but also strengthen public understanding of the dedication and sacrifice made by members of the Armed Forces both at home and overseas.
