Antrim Area Hospital recognised for quality of maternity doctor training

Antrim Area Hospital has received UK-wide recognition for the training and support it gives doctors specialising in pregnancy, childbirth and women’s health, following feedback from resident doctors.
The hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynaecology team was highly commended in the Overall and Obstetrics category for medium-sized hospitals in the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists’ (RCOG) 2026 Trainee Evaluation Form results.
RCOG said the results showed marked improvements in the hospital’s training environment, recognising the department’s sustained work to give trainees a positive and supportive experience.
Recognition based on doctors’ feedback
The annual survey asks doctors in training across the UK about supervision, learning opportunities, workplace culture, leadership, professional development and their overall training experience.

“Receiving recognition at the RCOG Training Excellence Framework Awards is a huge achievement and a reflection of the dedication, commitment and teamwork of everyone involved in supporting education and training within the unit.
“As doctors, we know how important it is to foster a strong training environment and it’s rewarding to see the hard work of so many people recognised.“
Building on progress at Antrim
Lynne McCartney, the Northern Trust’s interim Director of Surgery, Women’s Health and Diagnostic Services, said the recognition reflected the team’s commitment to education and training.
She said:
“We know that excellent training is fundamental to building a skilled, confident workforce and, ultimately, to delivering the very best care for our patients.”
For the Antrim team, the next step is to build on the improvements recognised through trainees’ feedback.

“This award which compares our unit against 169 other units in the UK is something that we are all very proud of, and we’re looking forward to building on the significant progress we have already made.”
