Repeated flooding that left a Ballymena road vulnerable during heavy rainfall has now been addressed, following months of concern from local residents.

TUV Bannside Alderman Stewart McDonald has welcomed the completion of works on Cardonaghy Road, describing the issue as a long-standing problem that caused “real disruption” for those living nearby and for motorists using the route.

Long-running issue during heavy rainfall

The flooding had become a recurring problem during periods of intense rain — something residents have experienced frequently over the past year. Water pooling on the road created hazardous conditions and ongoing inconvenience for those travelling through the area.

Alderman McDonald said he had raised the matter several months ago, highlighting the impact on the local community and pressing for action to be taken.

He confirmed that the Department for Infrastructure has now carried out works aimed at resolving the issue.

“I am pleased that, following my representations, the Department for Infrastructure has now carried out work to address the issue,” he said.

The intervention is expected to reduce the risk of flooding during future spells of heavy rainfall, offering reassurance to residents and road users who had been dealing with repeated disruption.

Local cooperation key to solution

The councillor also pointed to the role played by a local landowner in enabling the work to be completed.

“I also want to acknowledge the assistance of a local farmer who facilitated access to his land, which played an important role in enabling this work to be completed,” he added.

A step forward for local infrastructure

The completion of the works marks a positive step for the area, particularly as unpredictable weather continues to test local infrastructure.

For residents along Cardonaghy Road, the hope now is simple — that the days of repeated flooding and disruption are finally behind them.
