A unique tree nursery based within prison grounds is offering locally grown trees at reduced prices — with every order helping to support prisoner rehabilitation and protect Northern Ireland’s native environment.

The Magilligan Tree Nursery, operated in partnership with the Northern Ireland Prison Service, has launched two special offers aimed at households, community groups and businesses alike.

Buyers can now purchase 10 trees from £8.45, with a free tree included for every ten purchased — an offer that blends affordability with environmental impact.

More than just trees

Behind the offer lies a project with a deeper purpose.

Tree Nursery Co-ordinator Aisling Gribbin said the initiative delivers tangible benefits far beyond the trees themselves.

“Because we’re a sustainable tree nursery based in prison grounds, every order helps the community and environment in some unique ways.

“Orders help prisoner rehabilitation by boosting skills and employment prospects and also help the environment because we only grow native species using peat-free organic methods. This increases local resistance to disease by reducing numbers of imported trees.

“Plus, our outreach and education through volunteering and workshops means ordering from us supports the community too.”

Supporting rehabilitation and biodiversity

The nursery is delivered by the Causeway Coast & Glens Heritage Trust, an organisation with nearly 25 years of experience managing and protecting some of Northern Ireland’s most important landscapes.

Operating within prison grounds, the initiative provides meaningful opportunities for prisoners to develop skills, gain experience and improve employment prospects — helping support rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

At the same time, the nursery focuses exclusively on native UK and Irish species, grown using peat-free organic methods, helping to strengthen biodiversity and reduce reliance on imported trees.

Trees for homes, communities and businesses

The current offer includes Rowan, Alder and Birch trees, all available at the £8.45 price point. Customers can also select one of these species as their free tree with every ten purchased.

With the capacity to produce large volumes each year, the nursery can cater for everything from individual household buyers to large-scale orders from organisations and community groups.
