Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has announced a significant new investment of £670,000 to breathe fresh life into town centres across Ballymena, Carrickfergus and Larne, under the third phase of the Revitalise regeneration programme.

Led by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, Revitalise Phase 3 aims to support 60 businesses—20 in each town—by offering financial assistance to improve shopfronts, enhance the visual appeal of commercial properties, and contribute to more vibrant, welcoming high streets.

The programme is backed by £603,000 in funding from the Department for Communities (DfC), with the remainder provided by the Council and participating businesses.

Building on the success of previous phases—which have already seen over £750,000 invested in shopfront improvements and local marketing initiatives—this latest phase will also introduce outdoor street furniture to encourage the use of open spaces and support animation activities aimed at increasing footfall and community participation.

Speaking about the announcement, Minister Lyons said:

“I am pleased to see continued investment in our town centres through Revitalise Phase 3. This scheme has already demonstrated its value in supporting local businesses and improving the look and feel of our high streets.

“The new phase will build on that momentum, helping to create vibrant, welcoming spaces for residents and visitors alike.”

The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, also welcomed the funding, highlighting the importance of supporting independent traders:

“Investing in our local businesses is investing in our community, encouraging a sense of pride and enhancing their appeal. Attractive shopfronts not only reflect the town’s unique character but improves its attractiveness and supports the local economy.

“This scheme aims to provide financial assistance to local business owners wishing to improve their shopfronts. I encourage all eligible business owners to take advantage of this opportunity and apply for the scheme.”

Since its inception, the Revitalise programme has supported more than 115 businesses, helping to fund shopfront transformations and roll out high-impact marketing campaigns that promote local shopping, including festive initiatives.

The council has confirmed that further details on how to apply for Phase 3 funding will be released in due course.
