Woman left terrified after car repeatedly follows her on Ballymena road

A woman has described being left frightened while walking alone on the outskirts of Ballymena after a car containing two men allegedly repeatedly followed her, passed her and then waited along her route.
Police have confirmed they received a report of a suspicious vehicle in the Old Ballymoney Road area on Sunday evening, 9 August, and are now asking anyone who saw a dark-coloured car or captured footage to come forward.
The woman told Love Ballymena the incident happened at around 7.45pm on Sunday evening, as she walked alone towards the country end of Old Ballymoney Road.
She believes the car was following her from approximately 7.45pm until shortly before 8pm, with the vehicle disappearing around 7.57pm after she began speaking to family members on FaceTime.
She said she first became concerned when she noticed a car, occupied by two men, travelling slowly behind her.
‘It would pass me and then slow down’
Describing what happened, the woman said:
“I was out for a walk alone up the country end of the Old Ballymoney Road when I noticed a car driving slowly behind me.
“There was a man driving and another man sitting in the back. The car would pass me and then slow down, and the man in the back would turn around to watch me.
“It then started pulling into side roads along the route and waiting until I walked past before pulling out again and doing the same thing.”
She said the behaviour was repeated around four times as she continued walking.
By that stage, she had become increasingly frightened and contacted her husband and father, who spoke to her on FaceTime while she was still on the road.
“I was really scared,” she said.
“Once I was on FaceTime and they could see I was talking on the phone, the car disappeared.”
Concern for other women using the route

The woman said she decided to speak publicly about what happened because the road is regularly used by people walking and running, including women travelling alone.
“I just want other people to be aware,” she said.
“My husband often runs that road and has met lots of girls and women, sometimes in pairs and sometimes alone, walking or running there.
“If making people aware means somebody else is a little more cautious, or the people in that car realise their behaviour was noticed, then it is worth speaking about.”
The woman was unable to provide police with a registration number and could not be certain of the make or model of the vehicle because of how frightened she was during the incident.
Video footage captured at the time appears to show a dark-coloured car, which the family believes may have been a Ford Mondeo. That identification has not been confirmed.
Police appeal for witnesses and footage
The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed officers are investigating the report.
A police spokesperson said:
“Police received a report of a suspicious vehicle in the Old Ballymoney Road area of Ballymena shortly before 8pm on Sunday 9th August.
“Anyone who may have seen a dark coloured car in the area or with footage that could assist enquiries is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference 1779 09/08/26.”
Anyone who was travelling through the Old Ballymoney Road area between approximately 7.45pm and 8pm on Sunday, 9 August, and may have dashcam, doorbell or other relevant footage is being asked to check it and contact police on 101, quoting reference 1779 09/08/26.
