Two 17-year-old males have been charged in connection with disorder in Nailors Row, Londonderry, on the evening of Tuesday, 17 June.
The charges come amid recent accusations of a “two-tier justice system” after police were widely criticised for the lack of action against those involved in th unrest in the City during heightened community tensions across Northern Ireland in June.
One of the teenagers has been charged with riotous behaviour, while the second faces a charge of intentionally encouraging or assisting riot.
Both are due to appear before Londonderry Youth Court on Monday, 19 August.
A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokesperson confirmed:
“Two male teenagers, both aged 17 years old, arrested in connection with disorder in Nailors Row in Derry/Londonderry on the night of Tuesday, 17 June, have been charged to appear before Londonderry Youth Court on 19 August.
“One of the males has been charged with the offence of riotous behaviour. The second male has been charged with the offence of intentionally encouraging or assisting riot.”
Police added that, as is standard procedure, the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
The incident in June was part of a wider investigation into public order offences in the city, which have prompted concern among community leaders and residents.
