Two locals raise over £20k | Haircuts for Habitat: Shave for Shelter!

Two local people have raised more than £20,000 to support Habitat for Humanity’s life-changing work in Ethiopia.
One in four people in our world live in poor housing. Families are forced to live in places that are cold and damp, overcrowded or do not have a door that locks. Simple homes save lives. Families are healthier, children do better in school and parents have a chance to earn a stable income.
The rapid, global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic reveals the extent of the global housing crisis and the vital importance of safe homes. As Leilani Farha, former UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing said recently, “Home has rarely been more of a life or death situation.”
On World Habitat Day 2020, Monday 5th October, Father Raymond McCullagh, Chaplain at Ulster University Coleraine, & Fiona Fitzpatrick shed their lockdown locks to raise funds for Habitat.
Having volunteered with Habitat for Humanity over many years, Father Raymond wanted to raise funds for a cause close to his heart. Originally Raymond aimed to raise £2,000, but with support from Fiona, and the huge generosity of local people the total is already more than £22,000!
"We are so thankful for this wonderful support which will help transform the future for vulnerable people in Ethiopia. These funds will support the building of at least 5 homes, in a context where more than 90% of home in cities, like Addis Ababa are completely substandard. Habitat Northern Ireland’s long-term partnership has transformed the lives of thousands of people in the country, and connects hearts and lives here at home too." said Jenny Williams, CEO Habitat for Humanity in Ireland.
