Murdered: Nicholas “Nicky” Gordon
Two men have been arrested in Scotland on suspicion of murdering east Belfast man Nicholas “Nicky” Gordon following a cross-jurisdiction police operation linked to the fatal Holywood Road assault.
Mr Gordon, 51, died in hospital on Saturday, 16 May, four days after he was seriously attacked in the Holywood Road area of Belfast during the early hours of Tuesday, 12 May.
The arrests mark a major development in the PSNI murder investigation which has intensified in recent days following public appeals for witnesses, CCTV footage and information relating to the fatal assault.
Police confirmed the two suspects, aged 25 and 31, were arrested by officers from Police Scotland on Monday afternoon.
Suspects to be returned to Northern Ireland
The men are currently being held in Scotland and arrangements are now being made for their return to Northern Ireland where they will be questioned by detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team.
The PSNI said enquiries remain ongoing as detectives continue efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack and identify everyone involved.
Mr Gordon’s death shocked many across Belfast after details emerged of a violent assault inside an apartment building in the Holywood Road area.
Police believe the attack took place during the early hours of Tuesday morning before emergency services were later alerted.
Murder investigation continues after fatal assault
The investigation was formally upgraded to murder after Mr Gordon succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Saturday.
In recent days, detectives launched a public appeal urging anyone who was in the Holywood Road area between approximately 4am and 8.30am on Tuesday, 12 May to come forward if they witnessed suspicious activity or captured footage which could assist the inquiry.
Police have also established a Major Incident Public Portal allowing members of the public to upload CCTV, dash-cam and mobile phone footage directly to investigators.

Residents in the area are expected to continue seeing an increased police presence as detectives pursue further lines of enquiry linked to the murder investigation.
