The family of well-known Clough businessman Ian Hazlett has confirmed his peaceful passing at the age of 57, on Monday, 28 July 2025, following a long and courageous battle with myotonic dystrophy, a rare and progressive muscular condition.
Founder of Hazlett Fuels, Ian was a familiar and much-respected figure across the Ballymena countryside, known not just for his reliable oil deliveries, but for the kindness and dedication with which he served his community — often venturing out day or night, weekend or holiday, to help those in need.
Ian was the beloved husband of Tracy, devoted grandfather to Zach, and cherished son of Leslie and the late Margaret. He was also a dear brother to Sharon and Noel, and a treasured son-in-law, brother-in-law, and friend to many.
In a heartfelt tribute, his wife Tracy said:
“Ian loved his business and no matter what, when someone ran out of oil, night or day, weekend or even holiday times, he jumped in the lorry and was away.”
Diagnosed with myotonic dystrophy at the age of 27, Ian lived with the progressive condition for over three decades. Tracy explained:
“He just kept going on until his body would no longer let him.”
Despite his declining health, Ian continued to make a lasting impact in his local area. One of his final acts of community service was helping to secure an expansion of the Clough Cemetery, working in collaboration with the local council and another landowner.
“In recent times Ian made the decision that Clough needed a new graveyard as there was no graves, and worked in partnership with the local council and another landowner to achieve an expanded and upgraded cemetery for the local community.
“Now, he will be getting buried there tomorrow.”
Reflecting on their 33 years together, Tracy shared:
“Ian and I have been together for 33 years. He was the kindest, most generous and helpful, loving man.”
Ian’s funeral service will take place at his home, 10 Springmount Road, Clough, on Thursday 31 July at 12:00pm, followed by burial in the newly extended Clough Cemetery.
The family has requested no flowers, but donations in Ian’s memory may be made to Muscular Dystrophy NI via Logans Funeral Services, 12 The Diamond, Ahoghill, BT42 1JZ.
Family and friends are warmly invited to pay their respects at the family home on Wednesday 30 July, from 12:00pm to 4:00pm, and again from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
“Lovingly remembered by his sorrowing family and family circle.
“Peace is yours, memories ours.”
