Translink has launched its annual summer safety campaign, calling on passengers across Northern Ireland to ‘Play It Safe’ while using public transport services.

With the school holidays and tourism season in full swing, the public transport operator is partnering with the Irish FA and Ulster GAA to raise awareness of safety, respect, and responsibility on buses and trains.

Using a sporting theme to deliver the message, the campaign encourages passengers to stay alert, avoid risks, and consider the consequences of anti-social behaviour.

John Thompson, Translink’s Head of Safety and Corporate Responsibility, said the initiative comes at a crucial time as passenger numbers rise during the summer months.

“Our services play a vital role in keeping everyone connected to family, friends, work, leisure and essential services. We ask everyone to ‘Play It Safe’ when it comes to using public transport this summer so we can keep services operating and get people where they need to be safely,” he said.

Focus on railway and crossing safety

A key focus of the campaign is railway safety, with warnings issued about the serious risks of trespassing or using tracks as shortcuts.

Translink is reminding the public to take particular care at railway crossings—paying close attention to signs, warning lights, and barriers.

“We are also highlighting key safety facts like how quiet trains are when travelling at speed and how they may not always be heard until they are just metres away,” John explained.

“Similarly, our zero emission buses and Glider services are also relatively quiet so it’s important to stay vigilant when crossing the road.”

Appeal to parents and young people

Parents are being urged to ensure their children are aware of the dangers and not engaging in reckless or disruptive behaviour around public transport services.

“We would encourage parents to know where their children are and ensure that they are not engaging in unsafe or anti-social behaviour on the bus and rail networks,” John added.

Translink also cautioned against distractions such as mobile phones and headphones, especially when boarding, exiting or navigating platforms and stairways.

Safety measures and reporting anti-social behaviour

To protect passengers and staff, Translink has equipped vehicles and stations with CCTV, and conductors and inspectors regularly use body-worn cameras.

The operator is also offering rewards tof up to £1,000 to individuals who provide evidence of vandalism, trespassing, or anti-social behaviour that results in a successful conviction.

“Safety is always our top priority,” said John.
