One of the UK’s most respected Beltex sheep breeders is set to take centre stage at this year’s Balmoral Show, as top animals from across the region compete for honours in a key livestock showcase.

Cumbrian breeder Brian Hall will judge the Beltex sheep classes on Wednesday, 13 May at 9:30am in the Sheep Rings, where exhibitors will present what is expected to be a high-calibre line-up of the popular terminal sire breed.

Experienced breeder steps into Balmoral spotlight

Brian, of the well-known Ainstable Flock, began breeding Beltex sheep in 2001 after Foot and Mouth disease wiped out his flock of grey-faced ewes. His introduction to the breed came through renowned breeder John Hall of Inglewood Edge, who sourced nine Beltex gimmers and a tup from Belgium—laying the foundations for a long-standing and successful pedigree operation.

Today, Brian runs around 50 Beltex ewes, having reduced numbers following a successful sale in December 2025. That sale underlined the strength of the flock’s reputation, achieving a 100% clearance and averaging 1,600gns across 22 sheep sold. The standout price reached 4,200gns for Ainstable Kind, a gimmer from the flock.

Strong track record in sale ring and show ring

Brian is no stranger to standout prices and show success. At the Beltex Sheep Society’s premier sale in Carlisle in 2023, he sold Ainstable Hammer—overall champion at Skelton Show—for an impressive 30,000gns.

Further sales have reached 9,000gns, 4,500gns and 4,200gns, while his sheep have consistently performed in the show ring, picking up red rosettes at both Skelton and Penrith Shows for Best Overall Sheep and Best Overall Beltex.

His appointment as judge at Balmoral brings that experience directly into one of Northern Ireland’s most prominent agricultural events.

High expectations for competitive Beltex classes

Speaking ahead of the event, Brian described the invitation as a significant honour and pointed to the expected quality of entries.

“It’s a real honour to be invited to judge at Balmoral. The standard of sheep here is well known, so I’m looking forward to seeing a strong line-up. It should make for a competitive and enjoyable day in the ring”.

Eddie O’Neill, Chairman of the Irish Beltex Sheep Breeders Club, said the Balmoral Show continues to play an important role in promoting the breed and connecting breeders.

“Each year, Balmoral provides an excellent platform for the Club and its members to promote the Beltex breed. From the outstanding standard in the showring to the engagement at our stand, the event creates valuable opportunities for discussion and connection across all four days.”

Opportunities for breeders and visitors alike

Beltex Sheep Breeders Club members will be present throughout the Balmoral Show at the National Sheep Association (NSA) marquee, offering visitors the chance to learn more about the breed and speak directly with exhibitors.

The Beltex classes take place on Wednesday 13 May at 9:30am in the Sheep Rings, with club members also invited to a reception in the NSA marquee following the judging.

With a proven judge and strong entries expected, this year’s Beltex competition is set to be a highlight for livestock enthusiasts attending Balmoral.
