BBC News Northern Ireland has unveiled its latest offering for news audiences with the launch of The State of Us, a new podcast hosted by seasoned broadcasters Tara Mills and Declan Harvey.
The podcast debuts on Tuesday 6 May on BBC Sounds, with episodes airing twice weekly, every Tuesday and Thursday, and additional broadcasts on BBC Radio Ulster on Sunday mornings.
The new programme promises a fresh, informal take on topical news stories and major issues, with candid conversations and insightful guest appearances.
Tara and Declan, already known for their previous collaborations on BBC’s Evening Extra, Year ’21 and Year ’98, are bringing their dynamic chemistry and journalistic expertise to this new audio venture.
“With two previous BBC podcasts under our belt, we’ve already had fun tackling some thorny topics,” says Tara Mills.
“In a world where news is coming at us 24/7, we’re looking forward to unpacking one story at a time – and finding out new things about it. We’ll also explore why some stories are making the headlines and link all of this back to what we do on BBC Newsline.”
Designed to be both engaging and thought-provoking, The State of Us will blend “wit, wisdom and informality” to dissect stories that matter most to listeners in Northern Ireland and beyond. The pair aim to take listeners behind the headlines and into the heart of current events with humour, reflection, and personality.
Declan Harvey adds:
“For as long as I’ve known Tara we’ve discussed, debated, laughed and hung out. Now, they’ve decided to put a microphone in front of us! The State of Us gives us more time to chat and be challenged. There are questions to be asked about the world around us, and fascinating people to speak to.
“I think that we’re going to have a really good time talking about the news in a different way. And the best bit is that I won’t have to wear a suit and tie – always a relief!”
The podcast is part of BBC Northern Ireland’s ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality journalism in innovative formats. It also seeks to connect with audiences who prefer news that fits into their on-the-go lifestyles.
Kevin Kelly, BBC Northern Ireland’s Head of News and Current Affairs, said:
“This is an exciting new addition to our stable of content for BBC audiences in Northern Ireland and further afield. The State of Us podcast will talk about the news, make the news and help people learn about news stories in an informative and engaging way. It will tackle the big stories, and the serious issues affecting all our lives, and will hopefully have some fun as well along the way.”
Listeners can expect new episodes of The State of Us every Tuesday and Thursday on BBC Sounds and most major podcast platforms. The show will also air on BBC Radio Ulster every Sunday at 10:03am, beginning Sunday 11 May.
