Northern Ireland’s second largest energy supplier, SSE Airtricity, has confirmed that its standard variable electricity tariff will increase by 4% from 1 November 2025, affecting thousands of households across the region.
The change means a typical credit customer on a standard variable tariff will see their annual bill rise by around £45, bringing the average yearly electricity cost to approximately £1,227.
Raymond Gormley, Head of Energy at the Consumer Council, acknowledged the impact the rise will have on households but stressed the wider market pressures behind the move. He said:
“From November, those SSE customers on a standard variable rate will see their annual electricity cost increase to around £1,227.
“While this is unwelcome news for SSE consumers, we are aware the main drivers for this are rising network and operator-related charges.”
Mr Gormley urged consumers to review how they manage their energy payments, noting that the way customers pay can make a significant difference to overall costs.
“We would encourage consumers to think about the way they pay for their energy and see if they can reduce their energy costs. Being on a standard tariff and paying on receipt of a bill is the most expensive way to pay for your electricity.
“Switching payment option, changing billing method, or even switching supplier may save you money.”
The Consumer Council offers a free, independent energy price comparison tool which allows customers to compare all electricity and gas tariffs across Northern Ireland in one place.
For households without internet access, or for those who require additional help checking tariffs, support is available by calling 0800 121 6022 or emailing contact@consumercouncil.org.uk.
This latest rise will add further pressure to household budgets already stretched by cost-of-living challenges, and energy advisers are encouraging consumers to explore all available options to help mitigate the increase.
