Local sports clubs across Mid and East Antrim are being urged to seize a fresh funding opportunity that could transform facilities, boost participation, and strengthen community wellbeing.

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has opened expressions of interest for its 2026/27 Amateur and Grassroots Sporting Organisations Improvement Fund — a capital scheme designed to help clubs upgrade, expand, and future-proof their facilities.

The initiative targets clubs that either own or lease their premises, offering a significant financial boost to projects that can enhance the sporting experience and widen access across the borough.

Proven investment delivering real impact

The scheme builds on a strong track record. Over the past three years, 13 local clubs have already benefited, sharing more than £290,000 to improve infrastructure and create more inclusive sporting environments.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Jackson Minford, said the programme continues to deliver meaningful change at grassroots level.

“I am delighted local sporting clubs and organisations have a chance to benefit from our ongoing commitment to improve the physical, mental, and emotional health of our citizens.

“From strengthening local sporting infrastructure to the creation of more inclusive opportunities for people of all ages and abilities this fund has been a success to date.”

He added that the council is keen to work with organisations to identify projects that will expand participation, improve user experience, and support performance development.

What funding is available — and what it covers

The fund is designed to support ambitious capital projects that deliver long-term value to communities.

Projects must:

  • Be located within the Mid and East Antrim borough

  • Have a minimum value of £10,000

  • Be able to secure match funding where required

Successful applicants can receive:

  • Up to 50% of total project costs

  • A maximum grant of £50,000

Funding can be used for a wide range of improvements, including:

  • Building works: new builds, extensions, phased developments, or reconfigurations

  • Groundworks: paths, fencing, seating and external improvements

  • Capital equipment: items that qualify on a financial balance sheet

  • Professional fees: including architectural costs and tender advertising (up to 10% of the grant)

Key dates and how to apply

Clubs interested in applying must first submit an expression of interest as part of the initial stage of the process.

An online information session will take place on 14 April 2026 (6pm–7pm), offering guidance on the scheme and a chance to ask questions.

Organisations can request an application pack or register for the session by emailing: regenerationgrants@midandeastantrim.gov.uk

The deadline for submissions is 5pm on 27 April 2025.

A boost for community sport and wellbeing

With rising demand for accessible, high-quality sports facilities, the latest funding call represents a key opportunity for local clubs to invest in their future — and in the health and wellbeing of their communities.

By supporting infrastructure upgrades and inclusive participation, the council aims to ensure grassroots sport continues to thrive across Mid and East Antrim for years to come.
