Political representatives across North Antrim have united in condemning a suspected racially motivated arson attack in Ballymena that left six vehicles destroyed.

The incident occurred on Sunday night at around 10.10pm on the Lisnevenagh Road, when six cars were deliberately set alight outside a property where Filipino nationals were living.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has confirmed it is treating the case as arson with a hate crime element.

A PSNI spokesperson said:

“Our enquiries are ongoing and, at this time, we are treating this as arson with a racially-motivated hate element. We are appealing to anyone who might have any information which may assist us, to get in touch. The number to call is 101, quoting reference number 1473 31/08/25.”

Political leaders condemn attack

TUV North Antrim MP Jim Allister described the incident as “highly dangerous and distressing”, stressing the potential for serious harm.

“Six cars were deliberately set alight while the tenants were inside — a situation that could have tragically resulted in serious injuries or worse,” he said.

“It is also important to stress that this is not a case of illegal immigration. These individuals have come to Northern Ireland to work and to take up employment. They are here legally and are contributing to the local economy.”

TUV MLA Timothy Gaston, who has been liaising with the landlord and employer of the affected tenants, urged calm and cooperation with the investigation.

“The PSNI is actively investigating this matter, and I would urge anyone with information to speak directly to the police. Unverified claims circulating on social media are not helpful, and it is vital that we allow due process to unfold.”

UUP North Antrim MLA Jon Burrows also condemned the attack, calling it “disgraceful”.

“This was a disgraceful attack on law abiding and hard working people who make a significant contribution to the local economy,” he said.

“I have already contacted the senior police team in the area to check on the progress of the investigation and I have requested additional patrols to reassure the local community and deter further attacks.”

He appealed to anyone with information to contact either the PSNI or Crimestoppers anonymously.

Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan described the incident as “outrageous” and urged community solidarity against racism.

“This is a continuation of the disgraceful, evil and reprehensible racist attacks that fly in the face of the vast majority of the people and communities who are welcoming and embrace diversity,” he said.

“This racist attack is to be condemned in the strongest terms by all, we need to all stand together, and show strong leadership. Racism has no place in this community.”

Community impact

The attack has caused widespread concern in Ballymena, particularly within the Filipino community, which plays a key role in the local workforce. Political representatives have called for vigilance, additional police presence, and support for the victims.

Anyone with information has been urged to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1473 31/08/25, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
