A poignant Service of Remembrance took place on Sunday (19th November), on Rathlin Island, County Antrim.


The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Deputy Mayor Margaret Ann McKillop and Alderman Yvonne Boyle from Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, joined veterans of Ballycastle Royal British Legion (RBL), officers of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), representatives of the Royal Navy, along with members of the local community.



The annual Service is one of the last to be held each year in County Antrim.

Mayor Steven Callaghan and Deputy Mayor Margaret Ann McKillop took part in a wreath laying ceremony and attended the Remembrance Service which was held at St Thomas' Parish Church on the island, which honoured and remembered all those who lost their lives in many conflicts over the years.


Commenting after the special event the borough's mayor, Cllr Steven Callaghan said:


“It’s important to take time to reflect on the sacrifices that so many people have made in the name of others.



"Remembrance Day services were held throughout Causeway Coast and Glens on Sunday, last Sunday where communities honoured the great sacrifice the service men and women of the Borough have made to protect others."


On the journey to Rathlin Island, he also laid a biodegradable wreath at sea to commemorate HMS Drake.

The World War One cruiser was torpedoed by a German submarine U-79 after her Convoy HH24 had dispersed, with the loss of 18 lives, on 2 October, 1917.


The vessel sank about five miles off Rathlin Island, County Antrim.
