South Antrim MP Robin Swann is set to host a public conservation event in Toome focused on protecting native swifts as concern grows over the future of the birds across Northern Ireland.
The free event will take place between 1pm and 2pm on Friday 12 June at the Lock Keeper’s Cottage in Toome as part of the upcoming Great Big Green Week.
Mr Swann will be joined by local swift conservationists, including representatives from the RSPB Antrim Group, to discuss the ‘Home for Swifts’ campaign and the importance of protecting nesting spaces for the birds.
Campaign aims to raise awareness locally
The South Antrim MP said he hopes the event will help raise awareness about the need to protect swifts and encourage practical local action from residents, businesses and councils.
Swifts, often recognised for their fast flight and distinctive summer calls, rely heavily on access to nesting spaces in roofs and buildings, with conservation groups increasingly warning about habitat loss and declining numbers.
Mr Swann is encouraging individuals, businesses and local authorities to take what he described as “small but important steps” to help ensure the “Bird of the Borough” continues to have a home in the area.
“I am pleased to be hosting this event as part of the Great Big Green Week to highlight the really important work being done to protect our native swifts,” he said.
“These birds are an important part of our local nature, and it is essential that we do more to support their conservation.”
Residents invited to attend discussion
Mr Swann said the event will also provide an opportunity for local residents to learn more about how they can support conservation efforts in their own communities.
“I look forward to welcoming local residents to the Lock Keeper’s Cottage to discuss how we can all play a part in making South Antrim a safer place for these birds,” he added.
The event forms part of Great Big Green Week, a UK-wide initiative promoting environmental awareness and community-led action on nature and sustainability issues.
