Public transport has played a starring role in the success of The 153rd Open Championship, with more than 200,000 journeys made on Translink services during the prestigious tournament week on the Causeway Coast.

From 13–20 July, Translink’s buses, coaches, and trains operated at full capacity to meet surging demand as golf fans, volunteers, and event staff descended on Portrush.

Enhanced public transport schedules and a dedicated Open Park & Ride service formed part of a major transport operation coordinated with multiple agencies.

Chris Conway, Translink Group Chief Executive, praised the collaborative effort behind the scenes:

“This week has been the culmination of months of intensive preparation right across the business. A huge thank you to all our employees, partner agencies, volunteers and customers for their support during this major transport operation.”

He continued:

“Every available bus, coach and train was used to deliver the multi-agency transport plan providing journeys for spectators, volunteers and others working at the event while also maintaining normal services for our regular customers and even hosting our in-station fan zone to add to the golf celebrations.”

Translink’s fan zone provided a festive atmosphere at key transport hubs, enhancing the experience for travellers while helping promote Northern Ireland’s transport and tourism credentials on the international stage.

The operation was not only a logistical triumph but also a statement of sustainability, with public transport reducing traffic congestion and cutting carbon emissions during one of the UK’s most high-profile sporting events.

“We were pleased to once again play our crucial role in keeping everyone better connected, ensuring hundreds of thousands of people enjoyed this world-class Championship and showcasing the Causeway Coast and Northern Ireland to visitors from all across the world,” added Mr Conway.

With global attention focused on Portrush, the seamless delivery of travel services ensured smooth access to the Championship and underlined the importance of well-coordinated public transport during major events.
