Police are currently dealing with serious public disorder in Ballymena town centre this evening following a protest earlier in the area.
The incident, centred around Clonavon Road, has seen missiles thrown at officers and damage caused to nearby properties, prompting authorities to urge the public to steer clear of the affected zone.
In a statement issued on Monday night, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that officers remain on site to ensure public safety and are continuing to monitor the situation.
Chief Superintendent Sue Steen urged for calm, warning that escalating disorder would only place more people in danger.
“We are urging everyone to remain calm and to act responsibly. Violence and disorder will only place people at greater risk,” she said.
“Our priority is to keep the community safe, and I would appeal to everyone to work with us to bring calm to the area as quickly as possible.”
Members of the public are advised to avoid the Clonavon Road area until further notice as police manage the ongoing situation.
Authorities are also appealing for information from witnesses or anyone with relevant details about the disorder.
Anyone who can assist is encouraged to contact police on 101, or submit a report online at www.psni.police.uk/makeareport.
