A man in his 60s has died following a two-vehicle road traffic collision in Ballymena on Monday morning, with police appealing for witnesses and dash-cam footage as enquiries continue.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed that local man Jim Wylie, 60, died at the scene after the collision involving a car and a motorcycle in the Crankill Road area.
The crash happened at approximately 10.25am on Monday, 13 April, at the junction of Crankill Road and Tullygrawley Road, prompting an emergency response from police and other first responders.
Police confirm local man died at the scene
Detective Inspector Stewart, from the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit, said officers were called following reports of a serious collision shortly after 10am.
He said:
“At approximately 10.25am, police received a report of a collision involving a car and a motorcycle in the Crankill Road area at the junction of Tullygrawley Road.
“Officers attended, together with colleagues from other emergency services, but sadly the motorcyclist was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was 60-year-old Jim Wylie from the local area.
“The road was closed for a time, but has since fully reopened to road users.”
The death is likely to send shockwaves through the local community, with Mr Wylie understood to have been from the Ballymena area.
Road reopened after emergency response
The collision led to the temporary closure of the road while emergency services attended the scene and investigators carried out initial examinations.
The affected section of road has now fully reopened to traffic.
Appeal for witnesses and digital footage
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision and are urging anyone who may have seen what happened to come forward.
Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who was in the area around the time of the crash and may have dash-cam, CCTV, helmet camera, or other digital footage that could assist.
Detective Inspector Stewart added:
“Our enquiries are continuing, and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have digital footage which could assist with our investigation, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference number 376 13/04/26.”
