Proposed design of proposed new social housing scheme for Main Street, Toombridge by Rural Housing Association

A planning application has been lodged with Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council for a proposed new social housing development comprising 14 dwellings in Toomebridge.

The application for full planning permission has been submitted by an agent on behalf of JAMDAC Developments Ltd, of Hillhead Road, Toomebridge, for lands to the rear of 36-42 Main Street.

The proposal includes the demolition of an existing property at 42 Main Street and the creation of a new access road to serve the planned housing development.

A planning statement submitted with the application said the development is being “brought forward in partnership with the Rural Housing Association”.

The statement noted that the proposal will “contribute towards the delivery of much-needed social housing within the village and the borough through the redevelopment of a brownfield site”.

It explained that the development would be arranged around a “central inward-facing layout” accessed from a new entrance road.

The proposed scheme includes two apartment blocks containing six apartments in total, seven two-bedroom houses and a three-bedroom bungalow designed to meet complex needs.

“The proposal will make efficient use of previously approved residential land and will deliver 14 additional dwellings within a highly sustainable location,” the statement said.

It added that the proposed two-storey scale of development is “consistent with the prevailing form and character of surrounding development within the village”.

“The diversity of accommodation broadens housing choice within the village and assists in meeting the needs of a wide range of households including smaller households, older residents and those with additional accessibility requirements.”

The planning statement also said the revised scheme had been “designed specifically in response to the characteristics of the site and its planning history”.

According to figures from the Housing Executive, 18 additional social housing homes are expected to be required in Toomebridge by 2029.
