Police are appealing for information after a car was deliberately set alight in Ballymena in the early hours of Monday morning, with a petrol bomb discovered on top of the vehicle.

The incident happened around 6.20am on Monday, 13 April, prompting a response from police and firefighters.

On Monday morning police teams were seen with the vehicle in the area of Kintyre Park in the Ballykeel 1 estate in the town.

The vehicle sustained damage to its boot area, and detectives are now treating the blaze as a suspected arson attack.

Emergency response in early hours

Confirming the incident, Inspector Moore said officers were called shortly after 6am following reports of a car on fire.

He said:

“We received a report at around 6.20am of a car on fire in the Crebilly Road area.

“Officers attended the scene, along with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, who extinguished the fire.

“A petrol bomb was found on top of the vehicle, which sustained some damage to the boot area, and we are therefore treating this as deliberate ignition.”

Police have confirmed that enquiries are continuing to establish who was responsible and the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Appeal for CCTV and dash-cam footage

Detectives are now urging anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the incident to come forward, particularly motorists or residents with cameras that may have captured suspicious activity.

Inspector Moore added:

“Our enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information, including CCTV, dash-cam or other footage, is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 142 of 13/04/26.”

Police have also reminded members of the public that information can be submitted online through the PSNI’s non-emergency reporting system, while anonymous information can be passed to Crimestoppers.

The appeal comes as officers work to piece together the timeline of events in the Crebilly Road area during the early hours of the morning.

Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 142 of 13/04/26.

Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
