Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service opens recruitment for new wholetime firefighters

People across Northern Ireland who are looking for a physically demanding career with the opportunity to make a real difference now have the chance to apply to become a wholetime firefighter, as Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) launches its latest recruitment campaign.

Applications opened today, Monday 20 July, and will remain open for two weeks, closing at 12 noon on Monday 3 August 2026.

Successful applicants will join NIFRS as wholetime firefighters, working full-time from fire stations across Northern Ireland and responding to emergencies ranging from house fires and road traffic collisions to flooding, animal rescues, hazardous material incidents and specialist rescue operations.

More than responding to emergencies

While firefighting is often associated with emergency response, the role also includes helping prevent incidents before they happen by delivering community fire safety advice and education.

NIFRS says the position requires people who are committed, resilient and able to maintain a high level of physical fitness throughout their careers.

Tabitha Ramsay, NIFRS Director of People & Culture, said:

“Firefighting is a challenging but highly fulfilling career. Our crews respond to a wide range of incidents including fires, floods, road traffic collisions, animal rescues, chemical spills and specialist rescues.

“Firefighters also play a vital role in preventing emergencies through community safety initiatives and fire safety education. It is about much more than emergencies - it is about serving communities, working as part of a dedicated team and making a real difference to people’s lives.
